High cost of labor because of the big amount of manual tasks in growing vegetables in greenhouses. Two of the most labor intensive and precise tasks are twisting and removing side-shoots. Side-shoots are branches, bearing no fruits. Twisting means carefully bending the plant along a string every couple of days. Removing side-shoots is removing unnecessary leafs from the axils of the plant. Twisting and removing side-shoots accounts for 25% of the labor time in the growing process.
An agro-robot trained to simultaneously perform twisting and side-shoot removal over the plant lifecycle and therefore replacing a significant amount of manual labor. The AI algorithm reconstructs the spatial structure of the relevant areas of the plant, which makes this the first robot to identify side-shoots and remove them. This also enables the robot to automate twisting, a very delicate and vulnerable process. At a later stage, Vitalgia will add other tasks like harvesting and pruning.
