Many popular construction products, such as pipes, profiles, frames, downspouts or trunkings (among others), are made by extrusion from thermoplastic commodities like PVC, PE or PP. These materials often suffer premature failure because of mechanical stress, weathering, and high temperatures. Thermosetting resins, like Polyurethane, are High-Performance Plastics that show improved technical properties, but the current production processes are inefficient and make these products really expensive to be used in common applications. So thermosetting resins are only used in high added-value applications. Moreover, the conventional extrusion technology, which is the most important manufacturing process in construction plastics, is not appropriate for these kinds of materials.
INDRESMAT has designed and patented a disruptive extrusion technology to produce, for the first time in the market, extruded products made of rigid Thermoset Polyurethane. The technology will provide extruded rigid plastics, like frames, profiles or pipes (among others) with superior technical features (mainly thermal, mechanical and chemical resistance). They will start with existing formulations of polyurethane and later on, they will introduce high biobased content (up to 90% biobased) into the new construction materials.
