Last week we attended the second edition of the TU/e Contest by Technical University Eindhoven. Brightlands was, as a partner, judging the contest yet also present at the ‘innovation market’ to talk to students and attendees about Brightlands and Brightlands Innovation Factory. It was a full-day event with two rounds of very innovative pitches, held by students of the TU/e in Eindhoven. They were all selected out of a bigger group of candidates, they made it to the semi-final ready to win a price.
At the TU/e contest there where two rounds of pitches, where in the first round 20 students had one minute to pitch their idea or product to the jury. Biosensors, smart car glasses, hydrophonic systems, energy storage and 3D printing are examples of the ideas of these students. Patrick van der Meer, Director Dealflow management at Brightlands Innovation Factory was a part of the jury and watched the students pitch their ideas. The audience was allowed to vote for the pitches and judge their one-minute pitch what led to the audience winner and really made the audience feel like they had a vote aswell. After this round the jury choose 6 students to come to the final and pitch their idea in 2 minutes and convince the jury of their idea. Of these 6 students 3 were in the category ‘ideas’ and 3 in the category of ‘prototype’. We were all very impressed of the qualities of the pitches and the ideas and prototypes of the driven students.
We also met Eline, winner of TU/e contest 2015 and ready to travel to Silicon Valley and see what they can offer her company Soil Optimizer. It was really inspiring to see how driven these students are and spent every free hour to work on their business.
In the end, the winners were chosen and they received big prizes to develop their idea, create prototypes and make these concepts come to life. As Brightlands, we also gave away two prices to the entrepreneurs we think had the highest potential. Local Energy Storage & Utilization and T.E.S.T won the Brightlands prize and received, like Garden Garten an invitation to the Startup Fest Brightlands edition and participate in the ‘Get in the Ring’ at May 27th of this year.
Overall, our experiences with this year’s TU/e Contest were highly positive. We hope to see and help these startups in the near future and we’re looking forward to next year’s TU/e Contest.
